Day 1 Arrival & Transfer to Black Orchid Resort, Burrell Boom
Your van and driver will await you when you arrive in Belize at the International Airport and transfer you to Black Orchid Resort. Depending on your time of arrival and energy level, visit the Black Howler Monkey Sanctuary before dinner. A unique conservation effort brings together eight villages to protect the population and habitat of Belize’s Black Howler Monkey, affectionately called “baboons”. Within an area of approximately 20 square miles, straddling the mighty Belize River, the Baboon Sanctuary combines dense jungle with farmland, pasture, and small village life. The Black Howler Monkey is the largest monkey in the Americas, and found only in a small section of Central America. In fact, the total howler monkey population within the sanctuary is about equal to that of the humans-at 1000-1500 each! There is little that can describe the cacophony of these wild creatures, when heard for the first time, howling right overhead. See the myriad species of trees, plants, birds and other creatures that live in this specially preserved environment: Iguana, crocodiles, anteaters, turtles, and Howler monkeys of course!
Includes: Airport to hotel transfer, Accommodation at the Black Orchid Resort, Dinner, Guided Tour, Entrance Fee
Day 2 Lamanai Maya Temple & New River Lagoon
Our favorite Maya Temple tour! Lamanai’s setting in the New River Lagoon, with only jungle for miles around, gives it a special quality. Enjoy a scenic boat ride down the New River with your knowledgeable guide. Orchids and other flowers are abundant along the bank. Also be on the lookout for crocodiles, turtles, camouflaged bats and the “Jesus Christ Bird” walking on water. Lamanai is one of only a few sites whose original Maya name is known – it translates to “Submerged Crocodile”. This site features the second largest Pre-Classic structure in the Maya world and the view across the surrounding forest from atop the temple is magnificent. The site’s protected status provides for an abundance of wildlife inside the park. There are at least seven families of howler monkeys that make Lamanai their home and you will most likely see a couple of them peering down through the branches as you wander the trails and temples.
Includes: Accommodation at Black Orchid Resort, Guided Tour, Entrance Fee, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 Transfer to San Ignacio, Cayo & Your Choice of Adventure en route.
San Ignacio and sister-town, Santa Elena make up Belize’s second largest urban area. The two towns are separated by the Macal River and Belize’s only suspension bridge, the one-lane Hawksworth Bridge (Built in 1949). Together the towns have a combined population of about 20,000 including: Creole, Mestizo (Spanish-Maya), Lebanese, Chinese, Mennonite, Maya and other cultures. Known locally as “Cayo”, San Ignacio is located along the Western Highway about 70 miles west and 90 minutes drive time from Belize City and 9 miles east of the Guatemalan border. Teeming with archaeologists, peace corps workers, North American retirees and thrill seekers, “Cayo” is a unique blend of America’s Old West and tropical backwater with frontier-like wooden shops on narrow streets. Burns Avenue is “Main Street” and a good place to begin a tour of the town. Most days it’s a busy thoroughfare with lots of people walking in the streets. Burns Avenue and the adjacent streets are packed with shops, hotels and places to eat where hospitable townspeople mingle in restaurants, bars and wooden shops with colonial era architecture of days gone by.
